Newborn baby gear

I remember how hard it was to know what newborn clothes to buy and how many items to get as a first-time mother. Through my sleep-deprived haze, these were the items I used over and over:

Newborn baby gear guide - Happy Whimsy

    1. Wrap/kimono-style shirts and onesies were easiest to put on Little Bear. He was so small and fragile during the first weeks. The wrap style meant we didn't have to pull things up and over his head. The wrap was also great because it didn't disturb his umbilical clip on his belly.
    2. Muslin wraps, I loved these ones from Aden + Anais. We needed at least 12 just so to take the pressure off doing the washing every couple days. I think I ended up getting 20 of the wraps because they were so versatile and lightweight - eg. 1 in the baby bag, 1 in the car, 1 for the stroller (great to drape over the hood to keep the sun out) and a few strewn around the house as blankets, change pad, burp cloths.
    3. Small wash cloths, my favourite are these ones from Amazon. I used them during nursing as burp cloths and even now, they have held up well for over a year and get used during meals to wipe Little Bear's face and hands. If you buy wash cloths, make sure they have strong binding around the edges. The ones with no binding have fallen apart. I must have purchased over 20 wash cloths but I wish I ordered more, you can never have too many.
    4. My brest friend nursing pillow. What a lifesaver for my back! Loved the firmness and the stability of this. The little pocket in the front was great to hold small items like a burp cloth, iPhone, remote control.
    5. A breast pump. I ordered the Spectra Dew 350 based on product reviews online. I used the Medela pump at the hospital and didn't notice much difference with the Spectra model, which was much cheaper. I wasn't too fond of the actual look (the pink model looks very much like a boob) but it did the job and was comfortable.
These are what come to mind for now, I'll follow-up with another post if I remember more.

What did you find useful during those first few months?
